Balcony Railings
MS, SS and Glass Railings for Apartments and Terraces
A balcony railing does two jobs at once. It is the most visible part of an apartment from the street, and it is the one thing standing between the balcony and a fall, every day, for everyone who uses it. The second job is the one to design for first.
We fabricate balcony railings in mild steel, stainless steel and glass in our workshop in Malad, Mumbai, and install them on apartments, villas and terraces across India.
Balcony Railing Materials
- MS balcony railings. Mild steel balusters, the most economical option, powder coated or galvanised for exposure. See MS railings.
- SS balcony railings. Stainless steel needs no coating. Grade 316 is the one for balconies near the sea. See SS railings.
- Glass balcony railings. Keep the view open, which is often the whole point of the balcony. See glass railings.
- SS and glass combined. Glass panels with a stainless handrail on top, for a railing that is open to look through and comfortable to lean on.
Balconies and Small Children
Balconies are where young children are most often out of sight for a moment, so the details that matter on any railing matter more here.
- Vertical balusters, not horizontal bars. Horizontal rails work like a ladder. A child can climb them.
- No gap a small child can pass through, between balusters or under the bottom rail.
- Enough height. A balcony railing generally needs to be taller than a staircase handrail. We build to the height your building rules require.
- Nothing to climb onto. A chair or planter pushed against the railing undoes a good design, so keep them clear.
Built for an Exposed Position
A balcony railing takes sun, rain and, in coastal cities, salt air on every surface. That decides the finish.
- Mild steel should be galvanised, or galvanised and then powder coated for colour.
- Stainless steel should be grade 316 anywhere near the coast.
- The base should let water drain away rather than stand around the fixings.
Outdoor finishing is covered in detail in terrace and external staircases.
Replacing a Balcony Railing in an Apartment
Replacing an old or unsafe balcony railing is common work for us. In an apartment building, check your housing society rules before you order: many societies require balcony railings to match the rest of the building so the facade stays uniform. Send those rules with your measurements and we will design within them.
How an Order Works
- Send the length of the balcony, the floor, and a few photographs from inside and out.
- We quote against those measurements, covering fabrication, finish, transport and installation.
- The shop drawing is part of the contract and its cost is already in the quotation.
- Once the quotation is agreed, we survey the site, anywhere in India.
- The railing is fabricated in our workshop and installed by our own team.
Most work is completed in 2 to 4 weeks from drawing approval. Larger or more intricate runs can take longer, and we confirm the timeline before work begins.
Common Questions
What is the best material for a balcony railing?
Near the sea, SS 316 or galvanised mild steel. For an open view, glass. For the most economical sound option inland, powder coated or galvanised MS.
Is a glass balcony railing safe?
Yes, with laminated glass, fittings sized for people leaning on it, and no gaps a child can pass through.
How tall should a balcony railing be?
Taller than a staircase handrail, and at least as tall as your local building rules require. We confirm the height on the shop drawing before anything is made.
How is a balcony railing priced?
By the length, the material, any glass and the finish. We quote against your measurements rather than publish a figure. What sets the price explains what moves the number.
Send the Length and a Photograph
The balcony length, the floor and a photograph are enough for us to recommend a material and a design. Send your measurements, or see all railings and balustrades.
