Built for the Monsoon, Not Just the Photograph

A staircase to a terrace, a rooftop or an upper floor is a different engineering problem from one inside the house. It is not a matter of taking an indoor staircase outside. Everything that would slowly wear an interior flight over decades happens to an external one in a few monsoons.

We fabricate external staircases in mild steel and stainless steel, finished for the conditions they will actually live in, and install them across India.

The real problem

Water Is the Only Thing That Matters

Every external staircase fails the same way, and it is always water. Not the rain landing on it, which runs off, but the water that stops somewhere and stays.

  • Where a baluster meets a tread. A hairline joint holds water by capillary action long after the surface looks dry.
  • Inside hollow sections that were never given a drain hole, where water collects and works outward.
  • At the base plate, where the structure meets the terrace slab and water pools around the fixings.
  • On flat treads with no fall, which hold a film of water after every shower.

A staircase designed so that water always has somewhere to go will outlast one with a better coating and nowhere to drain. That is the whole discipline of outdoor steelwork.

Protection

Choosing the Finish

The finish on an external staircase is not decoration. It is the only thing between the steel and the weather, and the choice sets how often the staircase needs attention.

  • Hot-dip galvanising. The steel is dipped in molten zinc, which bonds to the surface and protects it even where it is scratched. The most durable option for exposed steel, and the right answer for a terrace staircase in most of India.
  • Galvanised then powder-coated. Galvanising for protection, colour on top. More expensive, and the best of both where appearance matters.
  • Powder coating alone. Fine for sheltered positions such as a covered balcony. In full exposure it will need maintaining, because once the coating is broken the steel underneath is unprotected.
  • Stainless steel. No coating to maintain at all. 316 grade near the coast, where chloride in the air will find anything less.

Paint alone is the false economy of outdoor staircases. It looks identical on the day of installation and entirely different after two monsoons.

Detailing

The Details That Decide Lifespan

  • Open or perforated treads, so water and leaves pass straight through instead of sitting on the step.
  • A slight fall across solid treads, where open treads are not wanted.
  • Drain holes in hollow sections, positioned where water actually collects.
  • Sealed joints at every point where two surfaces meet and could hold moisture.
  • Base plates set clear of standing water, not sitting in the puddle that forms on every flat terrace.
  • Fixings in stainless rather than plated steel, since a rusting bolt stains everything below it.
Safety

Wet Steel Is a Different Surface

An external staircase is used in the rain, in the dark, and often while carrying something. The safety dimensions are the same as indoors, but two things matter more.

  • Grip when wet. Perforated, chequer plate or grating treads keep their grip wet. Smooth painted steel does not.
  • A handrail that is comfortable in the cold and wet, and continuous from bottom to top.
  • Handrail height between 34 and 38 inches, with baluster gaps a small child cannot pass through. Terraces are where children go unsupervised, so this matters more here than anywhere in the house.
Fitting

Adding One to an Existing Building

Most terrace staircases are added to a building that is already standing, which makes access the first question rather than the last.

  • Where the staircase lands at the top, and whether the parapet needs an opening.
  • How components will reach the terrace, since a finished flight will not go up an internal stairwell.
  • What the base will be fixed to, and whether that slab or beam can take it.
  • Whether a spiral suits the footprint better than a straight flight, which it often does for terrace access.

Common Questions

Galvanised or stainless for a terrace?

Galvanised steel is the usual answer, and it is the more economical one. Stainless makes sense near the sea, or where the staircase is a visible part of the elevation and you want no coating to maintain.

Can a spiral staircase be used outdoors?

Yes, and terrace access is one of the places a spiral is genuinely at its best, because the footprint is small and the traffic is light. See spiral staircase safety for the geometry that matters.

Do you build fire escape stairs?

How long will an external staircase last?
