Glass Railings
Glass Balustrades for Stairs, Balconies and Terraces
A glass railing keeps a staircase or balcony open. It lets daylight through a narrow stairwell, keeps the view from a terrace, and makes a small space feel larger than a solid balustrade ever could. It is also the railing where the unseen parts, the glass type and the fittings, matter most.
We fabricate the steel fittings and handrails for glass railings in our workshop in Malad, Mumbai, and install complete glass balustrades across India.
Glass Railing Systems
- Frameless glass balustrades. Glass panels held in a base channel or on stainless standoffs, with no posts between panels, for the cleanest possible look.
- Glass railings with stainless posts. Panels clamped between SS posts, which is simpler to install and suits long runs.
- Glass stair railings. Panels cut to follow the rake of the staircase, with a continuous handrail for grip.
- Glass balcony and terrace railings. For apartments and rooftops where the view is the reason for the space.
Toughened or Laminated Glass
Both are safety glass, and both are used for railings, but they behave very differently when something goes wrong.
- Toughened glass is heat treated for strength and breaks into small blunt granules rather than sharp shards. When it fails, the whole panel goes at once.
- Laminated glass bonds panes together with an interlayer, so a cracked panel stays in place. That is why we prefer it anywhere a fall is possible, which on a staircase or balcony is everywhere.
Glass type and thickness are specified on the shop drawing for the height of the railing and the load it has to resist.
The Fittings Carry the Load
On a glass railing the glass is what people see, but the standoffs, clamps, base channel and their fixings are what hold it up. They are the part to get right.
- Stainless steel fittings in grade 316 for balconies, terraces and anywhere near the sea.
- Fixings designed for people leaning on the railing, not just the weight of the glass.
- A base detail that lets water drain away rather than pool around the fittings outdoors.
For more on the stainless side, see SS railings.
Safe Glass Railings
- Railing height between 34 and 38 inches to the top of the handrail.
- A handrail on staircases, so there is something to grip rather than the glass itself.
- No gap under or between panels wide enough for a small child to pass through.
- Laminated glass wherever a fall is possible.
Cleaning and Care
Glass shows fingerprints at hand height, so a household with small children will clean it more often than a steel railing. Warm water with a little detergent and a microfibre cloth is enough. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, which age the seals at the panel edges. Glass balustrade care covers what to inspect and when.
How an Order Works
- Send the length of the railing, whether it follows a staircase or runs along a balcony, and a few photographs.
- We quote against those measurements, covering fittings, glass, transport and installation.
- The shop drawing is part of the contract and its cost is already in the quotation.
- Once the quotation is agreed, we survey the site, anywhere in India.
- Fittings are fabricated in our workshop and the railing is installed by our own team.
Most work is completed in 2 to 4 weeks from drawing approval. Larger or more intricate runs can take longer, and we confirm the timeline before work begins.
Common Questions
Is a glass railing safe with children?
Yes, when the glass is laminated, the fittings are specified for the load, and there are no gaps a child can pass through.
Frameless or with posts?
Frameless gives the cleanest look and suits shorter runs and feature staircases. Posts make installation simpler and suit long balcony runs.
Can glass railings be used outdoors?
Yes. The glass copes with weather well. What matters outdoors is 316 grade fittings and a base that drains.
How is a glass railing priced?
By the length of the run, the glass type, the fitting system and the handrail. We quote against your measurements rather than publish a figure. What sets the price explains what moves the number.
Send the Length and a Photograph
The run length, the location and a photograph are enough for us to recommend a system. Send your measurements, or see all railings and balustrades.
